October 23

 Happy Friday!

This week has been about emotions and pumpkins!  How do those two things go together?  Ask your child!

Using jack o'lantern faces, we have been looking and thinking and talking about how we can tell how someone is feeling by looking at their face (what clues are there?) and what might make them feel that way?

We also created a rubric (checklist) for what we decided were important things to include when we are doing high quality colouring.  Ask your child what they remember is important!

Next week - more pumpkins, more feelings, and some story telling!

** Next Friday, October 30 is a PD day - no school for kids! **

Have a great weekend everyone!

October 16

 Happy Friday from Room 1

This week we worked on creating an alphabet for our classroom. Our first try we used crayons or pencil crayons to do our highest quality colouring and cutting to make their letter stand out.  Second try we painted for the very first time, and did a fantastic job!

We continue to work on engaging in learning opportunities during centre time. There were opportunities to practice our letter knowledge, to build together, and to create people using the shapes we have learned about.

Our weather has changed!!  This is a reminder that we go outside with the kids in ALL weather - please ensure your child is dressed appropriately, and that everything is labeled.

PLEASE - have your child practice putting on their boots and zipping up their jackets on their own.  It will be a big help at school!

Have a great weekend!

October 10 - Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

No school Monday October 12.

Room 1 spent this last week finishing up some things we had been working on, and thinking about what being thankful meant. We remembered what we had talked about last week - what had filled our hearts with happiness ( for Orange shirt day). We decided being thankful was saying thank you for the things that made us happy.

" Sunny days, so I can ride my bike" - Youssef

"Being able to play outside." - Elsa

"Playing at the park." - Romaan

" My two new bikes." Barnaby

"I can help my mom with my baby." Vicky

"My Mom" Susend (and Ms. Stephens)

"For nice days, and hot chocolate at night time. " Dana

"My small red fire truck." Christopher.

I am thankful for everyone in my class.  I am a very lucky teacher.

Next week we will be working on creating an alphabet for our room!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Love,

Ms. Stephens

 October 2 2020

Happy Friday!

Some families are having a challenge connecting to Google Classroom.  The two things I can suggest:  make sure you are not logged into google under any other account and/or download the google classroom app for your phone or tablet.  The app is (apparently!) easier to navigate.

Next week -

Regular school Monday to Thursday.

October 9 - Professional Development Day - No school

October 12 - Thanksgiving - No School

This week -

We read the book My Heart Fills with Happiness by Monique Grey Smith, as part of our participation in Orange Shirt day.  It was our first writing job.  They did a great job!  We followed up by thinking about what we could do to make other people happy.  Ask your child to tell you what they did their writing/drawing about.

You can also ask:

- what's my favorite dance?

- what are rotation centres?

- what shapes can we use to draw ourselves?

Have a great weekend!

Ms. Stephens

September 21 to 24 Room 1 Kindergarten

I'm thinking that every week I'm going to say it's been a busy week!

This week we continued looking at shapes, colours and counting to 5.  We also continue to focus on routines and expectations.  We it seems we are all starting to feel more comfortable at school and with each other.  Time to change up centers for next week!

This week we worked a little more on our good copy self portraits, thinking about the shapes we need to draw ourselves, and what we wanted to change or improve from our first try.

We also started our first projects that involved following directions, cutting and gluing.  We've been reading Pete the Cat and his 4 Groovy Buttons - so we have started putting together our very own Pete. We are writing our names on our work (ask you child "what do we put on our work first?") cutting out rectangles for Pete's body, then carefully gluing together the rest of his body.  What shapes did we use?

We continue to start the day with our morning message and letter hunt.  We read the message together, and then kids can come up and try and find a letter (with hints, modeling, everyone knows different things, and I'm here to help!) and some kids want to even try and find a word!  It's a great start to our day, and something you could try at home with things around the house - can you find any of the letters in your name on your cereal box at breakfast?  What about when you are out and about - can they recognize any letters in the environmental print around them?

I'm looking forward to talking to as many families as I can this week during parent teacher conferences.  If we weren't able to connect, I'm happy to try and set up a meeting with you another time.

Have a great weekend!

Ms. Stephens

September 14th to 18th Room 1 Kindergarten

 Hi Families!

It's been a busy week in Room 1.  We are working on learning routines and expectations - that is a BIG part of the beginning of Kindergarten.  The kids have been helping me remember too, so I know they are getting it!

We have been reading Pout Pout Fish goes to school - ask your child if they remember our four "things". We are smart! We can get it! We belong!  So don't forget it!

We are trying out new toys and ways to play together during centres - how to share, invite a friend and take turns.

Our biggest learning this week has been around drawing self portraits! What do we look like?  What shapes do we need to draw our bodies?  What details make us uniquely us?  Next week - our best copy!

Just a few notes   - We are a nut aware school, so please don't send peanut butter or nutella.

                            - Please label EVERYTHING your child brings to school

                           - We go outside every day.  Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately.

Have a great weekend everyone!
